Mario Martin guitars are hand built in Murfreesboro, TN just 40 minutes down the road from us! Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. These guys maintain one of the best collections of tonewoods around, and every neck/body/pickup combination is chosen carefully to amplify the personality of the guitar as a whole. Whether you crave an S-style guitar straight out of 1958 or the unique Tele-Strat mashup that is the Honcho, we are confident you’ll find what you’re looking for in a Mario Martin.
What Does Parker Think?
Mario Martin makes great Tele-style guitars and this is no exception! If you’re looking for a vintage 50’s Tele aesthetic you cannot go wrong here. It certainly looks the part with the Nocaster blonde finish on a lightweight Swamp Ash body, and with its comfy soft V and 9.5-12” compound radius this T is a joy to play!
The Fralin Vintage Hot Tele neck pickup sounds great, and doesn’t have any of the shortcomings some other Tele neck pickups often do. For example, it never sounds too dark or muddy. It’s almost Strat-y in its articulation and clarity and has a nice subtle scoop that comes across through the amp as clear and dynamic. It sounds great for everything from jazz to country to blues!
The Fralin Blues Special bridge pickup twangs with the best of ‘em! I love how it’s bright without being harsh, but still feels full and powerful. It has a brilliant stringiness through the Bad Cat Handwired Cub I was testing it through that sounded amazing especially for chicken pickin’. That being said, don’t think this guitar is just for country, it can rock just as good! With a bit of gain this guitar rips, and the bridge pickup evokes the best sounds of the 50’s and 60’s!
How Does It Play?
This guitar is very comfortable to play, don’t let the Soft V intimidate you. It is very comfortable. Think a round C but with the shoulders carved away a bit to make it a little less chunky. The 9.5-12” radius is a great touch as well, making it easy to play all over the neck. The string action hovers right around 4/64” at the 12th fret without a hint of buzz.
