Mario Martin guitars are hand built in Murfreesboro, TN just 40 minutes down the road from us! Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. These guys maintain one of the best collections of tonewoods around, and every neck/body/pickup combination is chosen carefully to amplify the personality of the guitar as a whole. Whether you crave an S-style guitar straight out of 1958 or the unique Tele-Strat mashup that is the Honcho, we are confident you’ll find what you’re looking for in a Mario Martin.
What Does Josh Think?
Holy Smokes! The Acrane ’61 Experience pickup set was already one of my favorite Strat sets. But this guitar takes the set to a whole new level, showcasing a marvelously warm sounding piece of swamp ash. The bottom end is just humongous. And yet the guitar is tight and punchy throughout.
The in-between positions highlight that signature strat “quack” without any loss of volume. The maple neck begs some serious chicken pickin’ in the first two positions (bridge and bridge/middle). This guitar will dish out all the funk you can handle, too. Whether position two or four is more your thing, these middle positions are magic with their quick response and wide tonal spectrum.
The neck position is incredibly big and bold. But just as you’d expect from a turn-of-the-decade 60’s-inspired pickup, you get a nice clean midrange and beautiful touch response. The pickup resistance measures around 6.2k across the set, leaving plenty of room for the guitar’s tone to shine regardless of the position you choose.
How Does It Play?
Mario’s guitars always set up incredibly well. This one features Mario’s Chunky C neck profile, which is succeeded by Chunky C+ and Chunky C++ in the size hierarchy before reaching baseball bat. That is to say, not excessively chunky. It is comparable to a ’65 C from Fender’s Custom Shop, as a point of reference. The string action hovers right around a nice low 4/64” at the 12th fret across all strings, without any fretbuzz.
