Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. What Do We Think?

This is one of our favorite Mario Guitars yet. It is spectacularly lightweight, yet has a bit appetite for tone. The weight is due not only to Mario’s wonderful selections of wood stock, but also to the hybrid Swamp Ash body core and Paulownia wings. This combination preserves the pure, articulate midrange and sweet trebles of the Swamp Ash alongside the extra weight relief of the Paulownia.

The Fralin Vintage Hots are a low-to-medium output pickup set (emphasis being on the “vintage”, not the “hot”). Don’t be afraid to open up the amp and let the guitar breathe. This guitar likes some good headroom, but also loves a power section being pushed to breakup. The low end really starts to thump in the tightest, most welcome way as you let the amp do the work for you. Also worth noting: positions 2 and 4 speak with distinction—plenty of quack and power—and balance nicely with the single pickup positions.

How Does It Play?

Mario guitars are dialed in wonderfully by the builders, and they’re just down the road so the guitars really don’t even go through any environment change from their shop to ours. But we still do our due diligence just as on every other guitar we sell, making sure we are familiar with the guitar on a personal level and giving one more test of every component and a final check on the setup before shipping.
