Mario Martin guitars are hand built in Murfreesboro, TN just 40 minutes down the road from us! Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. These guys maintain one of the best collections of tonewoods around, and every neck/body/pickup combination is chosen carefully to amplify the personality of the guitar as a whole. Whether you crave an S-style guitar straight out of 1958 or the unique Tele-Strat mashup that is the Honcho, we are confident you’ll find what you’re looking for in a Mario Martin.
What Do We Think?
This swamp ash Blackguard-inspired build knocks it out of the park. It weighs exactly 6.5lb so you won’t drop a beat as the night goes on. And it won’t either. The 1-piece body is dry and resonant. The Lollar Vintage T set is our favorite Tele pickup set in the lineup. It’s balanced, can be sweet or punchy as desired, and does it all without ice-picky highs.
The bridge pickup has a commanding snap on bottom and a clear, beautiful midrange. The top end tapers off pleasingly, but still sings. This pickup loves dirt just as much as cleans. It stays focused and punchy as you dial up the gain and/or volume.
The neck pickup is very lively as well, with a bit of low midrange chew and upper midrange scoop that makes you really want to dig in on single note leads and double stops. As a rhythm tone, it has plenty of clarity all the way through the sonic spectrum.
The standard middle position is charmingly chimey. It will take you to heaven with your board of ambient effects. Or if you are looking to descend into the depths of rock ‘n’ roll, the guitar is wired with a 4-way switch to give you just the thing. Throw that switch all the way forward for pickups-in-series and you have a big, powerful humbucking tone. It is akin to a neck position humbucker but more transparent and expressive in the upper register.
How Does It Play?
The string action is low without buzz. Barely a hair over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret, and under 4/64” on the high E. The neck profile is Mario’s “Chunky C,” which we do not find overly chunky if we may say so. It is round and supportive, but smooth and comfortable all the way up.
