Mario Martin guitars are hand built in Murfreesboro, TN just 40 minutes down the road from us! Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. These guys maintain one of the best collections of tonewoods around, and every neck/body/pickup combination is chosen carefully to amplify the personality of the guitar as a whole. Whether you crave an S-style guitar straight out of 1958 or the unique Tele-Strat mashup that is the Honcho, we are confident you’ll find what you’re looking for in a Mario Martin.
What Does Ivey Think?
It's not every day you see a finish that pops the way this Mario S-Style does in Halo Flake Nitro. Not only is this guitar visually stunning, its sonic qualities are equally top-tier with its Swamp Ash body and Porter Vintage Custom pickups.
The bridge position of this guitar is very pleasant to play. Even with the tone knob wide open it's nicely balanced, having just the right amount of both body and upper midrange cut. It sounds great with some overdrive, never getting harsh or brittle, and played clean is sits in the sweet spot of output to where you still have a nice "cluck" in position 2.
The neck position is incredibly sweet and well-sculpted in the mids. It’s a very dynamic pickup, giving you back what you put into it. It has all the percussiveness that you want out of a good Strat neck. There is just the right amount of output to maintain its vintage-esque mojo while at the same time able to drive a glorious edge-of-breakup tone. Combined with the middle pickup, you have a position 4 tone that will turn any John Mayer fan’s head.
The Wilkinson tremolo on this guitar is a new spec for us and we really like what it adds to the tone and feel of this guitar. It feels more substantial than your standard vintage-inspired Strat trem, and there’s some added sustain there as well. The saddles feel very smooth under the hand and the bridge has a large area of contact with the body that allows the strings to resonate to their full potential.
How Does It Play?
The neck is a medium C, mid-60’s vibe at the first fret and not getting as chunky at the 12th. The string action is a breeze, measuring barely a hair over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and under 4/64” on the high E. There is no fretbuzz.
