The M-80 is a new version of the famous Super Fifty Nine Mark I and Mark II models that combines the best of those two amps into one super versatile tone machine. This 45 watt, EL-34 driven 80th anniversary model allows the player to utilize the low to medium gain tones found in the Mark II, or access the extra gain stage found in the Mark I when desired. All this is accessible via a switch on the front of the amp, or via a convenient footswitch. It also features a tube buffered effects loop, and has the same full palette of tone controls as the other models.

What Do We Think?

This is 45 watts with some big tone… and loads of versatility. The master volume does a very nice job giving you control over your level in the room and this amp isn’t afraid to go straight-ahead rock ‘n’ roll at any volume. But you also have plenty of options between the 2 inputs (high and low sensitivity) and the 2 footswitchable modes (Hi and Lo Gain).

We really dig what you get when you let this amp breath a bit… Input 2 and the Lo Gain side will get you there. The amp has some nice spongy compression here along with a chimey top end. Input 1 gives you more top end and higher pickup sensitivity, pushing the amp harder and bringing out some extra sizzle.

Back to Input 2 but switching to the Hi Gain mode, this amp really starts to bark. It’s got great crunch with an ear towards vintage tones. There’s a perfect combination of tube sag and instantaneous response from the speakers. As a side note, we REALLY like Filter’Tron pickups through input 2 on this amp.

Input 1 on Hi Gain is where things truly get ripping. Throw a pair of humbuckers in front of the amp and think the opening scene of Back To The Future. Okay so that’s a little extreme but it sums up the feel of the amp in this combination… more grind, more cut, and just all-around more nasty. But that’s exactly what you want. The sound is huge and while the amp does love being run with the master up, you can also tame your volume quite effectively while maintaining the body and vitality.
