What Do We Think?
Let’s talk tone in a minute. First, let’s talk everything that catches the eye. This is a luthier grade guitar from tip to toe, with all the cosmetic niceties added in for good measure. You have a Tier 1 Quilted Maple top for starters. Natural binding stained a subtle transparent violet, and set apart from the rest of the top by 3-layer black/white/black purfling. The neck is flamed rock maple, quartersawn for stability. From finish to nut and fret dressing, this guitar is the epitome of attention to detail.
And now it comes full circle to tone. All those fancy woods mentioned are a significant part of the tonal formula of the guitar as well. The maple neck gives the guitar a directness that a mahogany neck doesn’t have. The mahogany body delivers warmth while the quilted maple top packs a punch. Put together, you have magnificent depth along with an articulation that allows you to play any note on the neck with equal authority.
The Bare Knuckle Mule humbucker in the neck is thick but tight; the influence of the maple neck is perhaps most perceived in this position. The bottom end maintains good definition; top end has a warm, quick attack followed by sweet sustain. The in-between area is perfectly balanced.
The bridge pickup… also Bare Knuckle Mule… has pristine clarity and strong upper harmonics. The midrange is vocal rather than nasal. The low end absolutely chugs. It can be downright mean when you want it to, and it sings on an overdriven amp. Yet rolling back the volume on the guitar evokes the tones of a ‘50s Tele in the hands of Waylon Jennings. Use of a phaser pedal is optional.
How Does It Play?
The Knaggs “Slight V” is probably the most subtle V you’ve ever played. Think a round C with barely a little shoulder removed between the nut and fifth fret. You probably wouldn’t peg it for a V, but it does keep that neck nice and comfy in the cowboy chord area while also being full and supportive in the upper register. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret, and even lower on the high E, without buzz.
