What Do We Think?
Make sure not to get so mesmerized by the beautiful quilt top that you forget to plug it in! Because that’s where the real magic happens. The Bare Knuckle Mule humbuckers coax some superlatively rich and colorful tones out of this mahogany-bodied beast. And boy do they know how to clean up well. With the independent volume and tone controls for each pickup there is no lack of sounds at your fingertips, even if you never reach for the amp to mess with anything there.
The neck position is deep and fat, but the Alnico IV magnets keep it in the territory of vintage output so you’re not pushing your amp too hard. The result is smooth and sweet, with just the right amount of chirp when you dig in. Adding in the bridge pickup, you have a middle position that is open and 3-dimensional. Make those big chords sing with a piano like quality, or use this position for its quick attack and definition.
And the bridge pickup. Ooh la la. It has sizzle to the high end, and plenty of body with the guitar’s natural resonance. The top end sits in the perfect spot, probably more of an upper midrange bump to be exact. It is articulate but not bright. Even with the bright switch engaged on an amp, this pickup still sounds great. So don’t be afraid to try it just about any and every way you can imagine. We feel sure you’ll find a whole lot of “favorites” on the journey.
The Knaggs Influence bridge is part of the recipe as well. The string resonance has a touch of shimmer that you might not get from a standard TOM/Stoptail configuration. And yet the sustain feels rooted in the guitar. Joe Knaggs explains this as the vibration at the ball end of the string being connected to the bridge and body by the downward pressure of the strings on the saddles. Whatever it is, it adds quite a nice touch to the instrument!
How Does It Play?
The guitar sets up with string action measuring just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret, and even lower on the high E. There is no fretbuzz. The Knaggs “Slight V” neck is exactly that… think a nice round C with just a hair taken off the shoulders as you approach the nut. You probably won’t even think of it as a V, but it makes that cowboy chord area really comfy and transitions effortlessly into a supportive C moving up the neck.
