What Do We Think?
The Kenai-J HP has classic looks and feel, with a bit of extra versatility. The humbucker/P-90 pairing takes you places other guitars won’t go. And it’s all built on a recipe of mahogany neck and body with wraparound tailpiece to deliver incredibly satisfying resonance and response.
The Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge has a thick, but tight, low end. It also has a harmonically-rich midrange while sidestepping the congestion some bridge positions can present. We also find the pickup remains balanced and clear as you roll back the volume on the guitar, making it a superb choice for players who like to control their amp’s gain right from the instrument.
The soapbar Antiquity P90 in the neck is warm and woody on bottom, with a top end that is round and clear. A little natural compression keeps the bass tight even while it is impressively deep. The midrange possesses a throaty bite if you dig in, but the pickup can just easily melt away into fat chords and melody lines for soulful backing work.
The middle position is a beautiful blend of the two pickups. There is an immediacy and sparkle that prevails on top, but there is also the lower midrange contribution of the bridge pickup. The quality is almost acoustic in nature, forming a vibrant foundation for rhythm work and fingerpicked passages.
How Does It Play?
We received this guitar from Knaggs with very nice low action and no fretbuzz. Why mess with a good thing? The Knaggs “Slight V” neck is exactly that… think a nice round C with just a hair taken off the shoulders as you approach the nut. You probably won’t even think of it as a V, but it makes that cowboy chord area really comfy and transitions effortlessly into a supportive C moving up the neck.
