What Do We Think?

From the natural body binding with black/white/black purfling to an absolutely pimped out flame maple top in Charcoal Burst with hints of purple seeping around the edges, this guitar is ready to look the part. More importantly, it plays the part. Despite its slender dimensions this is one very loud semi-hollow guitar… acoustically speaking. It resonates against the body with undeniable energy.

The bridge pickup is surprisingly polite through a clean amp. The extra airiness of the semi-hollow body imbues it with a sweetness that we don’t typically associate with a bridge position humbucker. But turn on the gain and it becomes a different animal. It has a transparent, singing upper register and serious grunt in the midrange. Plenty of body without being overrun by bottom end.

The neck position is big and chewy. It sings just as well as the bridge position, but with definitive emphasis on a blooming low end and generous middle register. The middle position is round and piano-like. It has a wonderful immediacy and presence on the attack without sounding filtered or phasey.

P.S. Your eyes do not deceive you. We can’t let on how we did it, but we got black pickup covers on these Bare Knuckle Mules. Pretty slick.

How Does It Play?

The guitar sets up with string action measuring barely a hair over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12^th fret, and right at 4/64 on the high E. You can dig in without any worry of fretuzz. The Knaggs “Slight V” neck profile is indeed very slight on the V. Think a nice round C but if you pay very close attention, you’ll notice there is just a little taken off the shoulders at the first few frets to make grabbing those lower chords a breeze.
