From the mouth of the builder: “This new semi hollow features our biggest ever 15.5" wide semi hollow body featuring our I beam internal construction, Spanish Mahogany core and neck with Maple or Spanish Mahogany front and back plates. Huge, giant sound that is unrivaled in clarity and punch.” Despite its semi-hollow body, multiple members of the Guitars To Be Played team have commented on how uninhibited the upper fret access is on the Super Chief. The lower cutaway is fabulously deep and the heel is thoughtfully contoured. Even thumb-over-the-neck players will find ample room for their hand right up to the last fret. Also worth noting: Sperzel Locking tuners and Dunlop Straplock-ready buttons come standard!
What Does Josh Think?
These are two of my favorite pickups in one guitar. The Lollar Firebird in the bridge position has the EQ curve of a single coil but with some of the cushion in the attack—and all the noiseless quality—of a humbucker. It can be aggressive and even dish out some Tele-like twang, or you can smooth it out with the tone knob and have more of a traditional humbucker tone at your disposal. The Gold Foil in the neck leans even more towards the single coil end of the spectrum but with a deliciously rich midrange you won’t find elsewhere. On this particular guitar the E and A strings stay spanky and the G and B strings push forward nicely. Think Hendrix through a Bassman and add the airy complexity of a semi-hollowbody. Both pickups combine very nicely in the middle position, with lush overtones balanced by a beautiful transparency even in more overdriven applications.
How Does It Play?
A breezy 4/64” at the 12th fret on the low E, and 3/64” on the high E. We genuinely say this for every Kauer: We rarely set guitars up this low. We don’t like any fret zing whatsoever. But the PLEK’d necks on Doug Kauer’s guitars set up incredibly low without buzz. The rounded C neck profile feels great as well. This particular one pushes the envelope of a medium C and we’d probably classify it as a chunky C in unpretentious terms. We like it a lot.
