What Does Josh Think?
Doug is a master of mixing flake sizes for his metallic flake finishes, and this makes them dance under the light more than any other metallic finishes we’ve seen. Sky Blue Flake is one of our favorites, and this particular one has the slightest hint of turquoise mixed in for an extra-enticing appearance.
The Lollar Regals are a perfect complement to this guitar. I absolutely love a neck pickup position that “opens up” the amp instead of sounding dark and murky. The Lollar Regal in the neck position of this guitar absolutely does that. The low strings have a magnificent piano-like quality, underpinning a slightly hollowed out midrange and a beautiful chirp in the highs.
The middle position is tight and spanky. Not quacky, and yet creates the perception of a pair of single coils due to its immediacy and clarity. The acoustic properties of the swamp ash body really come to life here, showcasing a present bottom end and a nice shimmering resonance on top.
The bridge position adds a nice bark to the tonal repertoire of the guitar. It puts some extra meat in your middle register when compared to the other positions. It also has just enough of a bump in output to push the amp a bit harder when you dig in. But it is an exceedingly expressive bridge position which can just as easily sound sweet and nuanced.
Lastly, the Descendant Vibrato is an engineering masterpiece. It gives you an improved break angle at the bridge which significantly improves the desired resonance of the instrument and reduces the unwanted string noise that typically occurs behind the bridge with a JM-style vibrato. It has a very smooth action and returns to zero incredibly well. Both the tension of the vibrato itself and the tension of the arm in the socket can be adjusted to get the feel just where you want it.
How Does It Play?
The neck profile is a medium C with round shoulders. Plek’d to perfection, the frets are level and beautifully polished. The string action hovers right around 4/64” across all strings without buzz. And one more thing to note! While not technically spec’d as a flame maple neck, this piece of roasted maple does indeed have quite a flame figure to it!
