The Kauer Banshee features indelibly classic looks, comfortable contours and formidable tone. The mahogany body is slim but exceptionally resonant, assertive but stunningly agile. What Do We Think?

First of all, pictures don’t do this one justice. The camera doesn’t quite capture the variety of the coloration in the metallic flake, and it sure doesn’t catch the way the different sizes of flake twinkle independently of each other when you turn the guitar under the light! But we did our best, so take a look through the photos and enjoy the Limited Edition silver sparkle binding, the silver Kauer headstock logo of the same material, and the overall stunning color combo.

The TV Jones PowerTrons handle the tone department with exceptional taste. PowerTron Plus in the bridge delivers both brilliance and bark, with an agreeable midrange that cuts nicely. Rolling back the tone knob a bit drops you right into traditional Gretsch hollowbody territory. The PowerTron neck pickup has spectacular bell-like tones, big and warm but by no means muddy. When coil split, the mids are slightly scooped and the pickup pegs the John Mayer tones on tracks like “Belief” and “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” with surprising ease. The middle position has a healthy dose of that FilterTron chime with plenty of body to support your rhythm parts.

The three slider switches mounted in the pickguard are “cocked wah”, coil split and phase reverse. The first filters out high end for some seriously fat harmonic textures. On the bridge position into a boosted amp, it dishes out the opening rhythm part to Brad Paisley’s “Ticks” to a T. The coil split on the PowerTrons sits very nicely in a mix. The volume drop is minimal and the tones stay forward without loss of punch. The out-of-phase switch adds a bit of honk to the middle position and can be combined with both the cocked wah and coil split for an incredible array of tones.

How Does It Play?

The frets are PLEK’d to perfection, polished and dressed smoothly from every angle. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and 3/64” on the high E, without buzz anywhere on the neck. The C profile is unabashedly familiar at first touch, leaning on the substantial side to really get your mojo working. While this guitar is nothing short of a looker, it is also a mean player. Don’t forget to take a minute to appreciate the natural resonance before you turn up the volume!
