Like what you see? All photos are of the exact instrument you will receive!
The Kauer Banshee features indelibly classic looks, comfortable contours and formidable tone. The mahogany body is slim but exceptionally resonant, assertive but stunningly agile. This is an instrument with the muscle to stand out in a mix and the poise to play nice with the rest of the band. If this isn’t exactly the Banshee you are looking for, feel free to contact us for a custom order to spec one out exactly to your liking!
What Do We Think?
Every time we hear them, we marvel at the vocal quality of the Wolfetone KauerBucker set. Though perhaps not quite as chirpy as in the maple-capped Deluxe variant of the Banshee, these humbuckers still bark with some wonderful clarity and that slight wah-like character. The neck position is warm and deep but keeps its composure and definition. It also coil splits remarkably well, scooping the midrange without dropping substantial volume.
The bridge pickup is wound subtly hotter than the neck, making for a perfect counterpart with a little more bite when you want to rock. As expected, this position is a little more focused and cuts out some of the outermost frequencies on either end of the spectrum. But it balances its midrange emphasis with a nice, rich body throughout. This position probably best showcases the vintage-sounding “dryness” of the Kauer Banshee builds.
The coil split on the bridge is surprisingly strong as well. It has a nice “slice” that cuts through the warm mahogany body when you require a more crisp voicing. Since the guitar features individual coil splits for each pickup, you can play with three different combinations of the middle position: 1) both pickups humbucking, 2) bridge split with neck humbucking, and 3) neck split with bridge humbucking. Each combination shifts the frequency of a subtle midrange scoop, and a top end shimmer, to deliver distinct flavors that suit a variety of needs.
We can add a Bigsby to any Kauer Banshee with a tune-o-matic bridge and stop tailpiece using the Vibramate system, just like Doug used to do. He has stopped offering Bigsby's because they have become difficult to get ahold of. But we have them in stock ready to install, and Doug has authorized us to put them on for any customers that want one!
How Does It Play?
Incredible. Doug PLEKs the necks on his guitars and the results are undeniable. Of course, the entire guitar displays expert craftsmanship that all comes together the moment you pick it up. The string action hovers at 4/64” at the 12th fret, without buzz. The C neck profile is nice and full, giving the instrument a vintage charm despite its progressive appearance. This guitar is exceptionally lightweight, but without neck dive!
