Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Does Josh Think?
Lollar Imperials sit so well in the 24.75” scale length of the Fano PX6. The neck position engulfs you first with a warm, delicious midrange. But as you play, you realize the Alnico 2 magnets are granting a lively snap to the top end, thus providing an open an uncongested feel. And going the other direction, the bottom is deep but not spongy. Put a bit of reverb on your amp and put some slight volume swells in front of your chords… you’ll sound like a pipe organ in cathedral if that puts things into perspective.
The midrange of the bridge position is a bit more brash, but in just the right way. You’ve got alnico 5 magnets in this position, and they deliver a higher impact clean tone if you need one. However, it’s going to be hard to stay off the gain channel because this pickup absolutely roars. It’s tight, with growl down low and singing sustain up top. Play with the tone knob to coax out wah-like vowels when you want to kick the mood back a couple notches on those slow, weepy leads.
And where the neck position can mimic a pipe organ, the middle position has vibes of soulful acoustic guitar. And one that nearly plays itself, for that matter. The attack of each note is clean and clear. The EQ is even, without pronounced dips or bumps. Finger picking comes to life, and she ain’t too shabby of a strummer either.
How Does It Play?
The neck is a late 50’s inspired C with the finish sanded smoothly off the back. This one is shaped just a tad faster than most, with the taper not really filling out until the 7th fret or so. From there it gets a nice, full and supportive profile for those 12th position pentatonic boxes. The string action measures only 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and even lower on the high E. Set up without buzz.
