The Alt de Facto series is Fano’s top-of-the-line custom series. These are handbuilt in the USA by one luthier from start to finish so that every instrument tells a unique and cohesive story. Nitrocellulose lacquer body and neck of course. If this isn’t exactly the guitar you are looking for, let us know what you want and we’ll get you the best price on your custom build.
What Does Josh Think?
This guitar is loud and transparent! Black Limba is the more figured version of White Limba (commonly known as Korina), so that gives you an idea what this guitar is all about. And the Lollar Mini Humbuckers are superbly expressive. They respond linearly to 80% of the tone knob, allowing you to summon a multitude of voicings along the way.
The neck position has a vocal midrange, with nice open vowels that shift position as you tweak your attack or the position of the knobs. A heavier hand calls up a sultry midrange, and a softer touch puts more emphasis on the clean snap of the strings. There are qualities here that you would normally associate only with a single coil, but combined with the fuller attack and hum-cancelling qualities of a humbucker.
The bridge position is very balanced. It doesn’t accentuate a nasal midrange, but still packs a punch with just a touch of natural compression. The top end rings loud and less colored than a full size humbucker. As mentioned before, the mini humbuckers react smoothly to nearly the full travel of the tone knob. As you roll back the tone, the pickup avoids getting muddy. The midrange rounds out and the top end tapers off, but clarity is never lost.
The middle position captures a Strat-like snap without the quack. It is rewardingly crisp when playing quick funk patterns, yet also full-bodied when letting a few notes ring in a sustained chord. You can play this position much like you would an acoustic guitar. The bottom is firm and present, the mids clear and bell-like, and the top end vibrant and shimmering.
How Does It Play?
The late ‘50s roundback neck profile is full but accessible. Compare it to Gibson’s more recent take on a ’59 reissue. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret, and nearly down to 3/64” on the high E. There is no fret buzz. The contoured neck heel makes the transition to the upper frets a breeze.
