Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
This guitar is outfitted with a set of Fano's own humbuckers, measuring around 7.8k on the neck and 8.5k in the bridge which puts them just on the hotter side of vintage-inspired humbuckers. The bridge pickup sounds a little smoother in the top end than others in its class, yet cuts very well. It sounds very balanced in conjunction with the bit of extra high frequency content contributed by the Gotoh Strat-style bridge. And it is a little tighter than your average vintage spec pickup in the low end.
Playing through the neck pickup, there is a sweet compression throughout the frequency spectrum that provides a nice cushion when digging into notes. It stays smooth when applying some gain, and can get you great 80's lead tones that remain present even when laden with appropriate levels of verb and delay. And if you’re looking for chimey, shimmering cleans then the middle position is going to be just what you’re looking for.
How Does It Play?
Nice and low without buzz! The string action measures barely a hair over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret, and under 4/64” on the high E. The neck profile is a classic “early 60’s” C that feels fast under the hand. Almost an oval C in the sense that it has supportive shoulders, but doesn’t get chunky along the back. The neck heel contour makes it extremely easy to engage the upper frets and generous body contours keep the picking arm comfy all gig long.
Weight: 8lb 4oz (weighs a bit lighter than that on our scale but that’s what is on the spec sheet)
The Fano Custom padded gigbag is included.
