What Does Ivey Think?
This Fano PX6 in its Blue Boy finish has all the bells and whistles you could want. A Bigsby B5 Vibrato, Lollar Firebird pickups, block inlays, and a tastefully distressed body and neck. This guitar really feels and sounds great.
In the bridge position, the Lollar Firebird offers some incredible clarity with an open midrange that helps this guitar sit in a nice sonic space when played with a band. With a medium overdriven tone there is a brisk texture that sounds awesome on lead lines and big chords alike. The low end is punchy and tapers off nicely around 75hz which helps it retain a tight response.
Moving to the neck pickup you'll find tones that are very reminiscent of a Strat pickup but with a little more meat and no hum. There is a touch more compression than a single coil but without compromising dynamic range. When really digging in you get a nice sizzle in the high end matched with a chewy yet tight low end. The clarity in this pickup is astounding, making for a neck position that is nowhere near muddy. Last but not least, blending the two pickups together in the middle position makes for some excellent chimey tones that you'll be sure to use when getting heavy on the effects.
How Does It Play?
The late ‘50s roundback neck profile is full but accessible. It starts pretty moderate frets one through five and starts to pick up a truly chunky feel around the 7th fret and up. However you want to describe it, it is a delight to play. The string action measures barely over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and a touch under 4/64” on the high E, without any buzz. And you’ll also be pleased to know the guitar balances very well; there is no neck dive.
