What Do We Think?
Taking inspiration from the fabled Blackguard Teles of the ‘50s and moving those queues into the 21st century, this Fano SP6 is really something special. Modern touches include a 10-16” compound radius fretboard and a set of Lollar’s perfectly consistent pickups. Low wind P-90 in the neck and Vintage T in the bridge for excellent balance in all positions. Loaded in a tempered pine body alongside a Bigsby B5, you'll be hard-pressed to find another guitar with its versatility.
There's an ongoing debate on whether or not tonewoods make any difference on an electric guitar, but we'd be lying if we said it didn't impact the individuality and tone of this one. In the context of the bridge position, the Lollar Vintage T provides the twang and clarity you want to hear in a good tele pickup while the Pine adds a sweetness to the notes and feels like it subtly hugs and contains the high end when you dig in. The low end is chunky and full without being overbearing, filling out those stringy lower register riffs in a very pleasant way.
The Lollar Low Wind P-90 in the neck provides some very musical warmth and body to the equation, and compliments this guitar incredibly well. The maple fretboard and Bigsby provide solid grounds for snap and articulation, and the Pine adds a chewy element to the lower mids in this position. This is one of our favorite neck pickups, compressing naturally while still allowing plenty of room for dynamic response and touch sensitivity.
How Does It Play?
The late ‘50s roundback neck profile is full but accessible. Compare it to Gibson’s more recent take on a ’59 reissue. The fretwork is impeccable and the string action sets up just the way we like it, measuring barely over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and right at 4/64” on the high E. There is no fret buzz.
