What Does Ivey Think?
Shakespeare coined the phrase "All that glitters is not gold", and while that may be true for many things in life, Sir William certainly had never seen or played this guitar. This JM6 has a strikingly beautiful appearance with its Gold Sparkle finish, Rosewood fretboard and Cream appointments. But it also delivers incredible tones with its Lambertones Ristretto pickups and Descendant Vibrato.
These pickups are advertised as low-output P90's with a tendency to lean towards single coil tones, but by no means does low output mean these pickups sound thin or low volume. Upon plugging into an AC30-style amp in the bridge position with a little bit of gain, this guitar cuts exceptionally. It has a very pleasant upper midrange and just the right amount of body to support it. It makes for some very open and clear tones, yet even single note lead lines avoid sounding shrill or weak. This guitar really serves that middle ground between wanting authentic Jazzmaster tones and being able to use gain without sounding brittle or harsh.
The neck sounds are huge, think Strat but with more low end punch and a slightly compressed high end that retains clarity. It's amazing how impactful this pickup is without becoming boomy or muddy, and the upper midrange is rich and vibrant. When combined with the bridge pickup in the middle position, the midrange scoops out a bit to make way for all your verbs and delays with utmost transparency.
Lastly, the Descendant Vibrato is a great departure from a standard Jazzmaster trem. It allows for more break angle over the bridge which encourages more sustain and less string slippage in the saddle. It has a very smooth feel and the guitar stays in tune exceptionally well when using the bar. Also worth pointing out, the bar does not drop out of the guitar.
How Does It Play?
The early ‘60s-inspired C profile is temperately slim, but with a nice amount of shoulder to support the hand and thwart fatigue. The contoured neck heel gives smooth access to the upper frets, and the string action is good and low without buzz. It measures barely a hair over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th and under 4/64” on the high E.
