The Lynx offers a lightweight alder or swamp ash body, hand-sanded and contoured to feel right at home. Set in the body is a rock-solid Gotoh Fulcrum Bridge with a steel block to provide fat tones with no tuning issues and a great-feeling tremolo response. Its fast-playing neck profile is still meaty enough to keep the guitar alive, and the Lynx offers a variety of pickup configurations, from SSS to HSS and HSH.
What Does Josh Think?
I’m not always convinced by coil split tones, but this guitar won me over on that merit and many more!
Just on the surface, you have five stellar and extremely versatile pickup combinations. The low wind (neck) and standard wind (bridge) Lollar Imperial humbuckers can rip, but they have a wonderful nuance to them as well. The neck position clean is exceptionally warm but puts nice “air” and clarity on each note. That clarity holds up under gain as well, if you want some rich and syrupy lead tones.
The bridge position has EVH vibes of the Frankenstrat variety with that extra “tautness” only a 25.5” scale length can deliver. It is clear and powerful. Not bright, but balanced. The ebony fretboard imparts an articulate thump to each note. Whether going for a classic crunch or the gains tones of a modded Marshall, you’ll have no problem harnessing the beast.
The “in-between” positions add a little extra to what you’d get in those positions on a standard Strat. They still have that quintessential quack, but with some natural compression and a bit more punch. With that extra dynamic range, these positions become quite expressive. The bridge/middle combination instantly makes me want to play Jeff Beck-styled melodic lines.
Now let’s talk just single coils. Of course, you have a true single-coil in the middle and that’s a Lollar Sixty-Four. Additionally, push/pull pots on both tone knobs allow you to split the neck, bridge or both. Now the entire set can exude glassy sixties Strat tones in all five positions. Plenty of spank with really balanced EQ all around. In fact, I think I like this bridge coil split more than I like most true Strat bridge pickups!
When it comes to cosmetics, this guitar has it wrapped up as well. The Cosmic Amethyst colorshift finish goes purple to magenta to even copper depending on the light. The neck is roasted maple with AAAA-grade flame. The ebony fingerboard is 22 frets and features a compound 9.5-12” radius. And there’s no overlooking the gold hardware!
How Does It Play?
The neck is a perfect medium C with a broken in feel. The fret ends are beautifully rounded and the heel contour makes reaching the upper frets a breeze. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and even lower on the high E. There is no fretbuzz.
