With a shorter 24.75” scale length and a Graph Tech ResoMax wraptail bridge, the Lion JD is the brainchild of Justin Derrico (P!nk, NBC’s The Voice). It beautifully blends two of the most iconic single-cut guitar designs into one timeless, all-mahogany, dual-humbucker model, available in two stage-ready finishes. 

What Do We Think?

Think you need a set neck and a heavy maple cap to get those thick humbucking tones? Justin Derrico might have a thing or two to say about that. Or we can just let the mahogany neck and body of his Shabat signature model do the talking.

The top end on this guitar is nice and airy, but underneath you get a perfect storm of thick mahogany chunk and big midrange. The neck position has a dry warmth that sounds beautiful clean and can make an amp weak in the knees when pushed.

The bridge pickup barks. It’s thick and maintains the woody character of the guitar, but also shifts the natural EQ bump up a string or two to really make the upper midrange sing. It has a surprising sweetness played clean, but we know you’re going to want to rip in this position so… turn that amp up and revel in the rich saturation this guitar coaxes out of your amp.

The middle position is no slouch either. It has BB King written all over it. It has a smokey lower register that you typically wouldn’t find in a middle position, but keeps a nice chirp on top. The upper mids sit back to give this position a whole different voice.

How Does It Play?

Avi Shabat does some of the finest fretwork in the industry. Level frets, perfectly polished, and nicely rounded fret ends. The Medium C neck is exactly that. No surprises. The string action on this beauty measures just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12^th fret and even a little lower on the high E string, without any buzz.
