The Lynx offers a lightweight alder or swamp ash body, hand-sanded and contoured to feel right at home. Set in the body is a rock-solid Gotoh Fulcrum Bridge with a steel block to provide fat tones with no tuning issues and a great-feeling tremolo response. Its fast-playing neck profile is still meaty enough to keep the guitar alive, and the Lynx offers a variety of pickup configurations, from SSS to HSS and HSH.
What Does Josh Think?
We spec’d this one to respect the classics but not stop there. The feel is mid-60’s but with a contoured neck heel and a more responsive Gotoh 2-pivot tremolo. And tonal options abound with the HSH pickup configuration and individual coil split on each humbucker.
The bridge pickup is a standard wind Lollar Imperial humbucker. Nothing too hot. Straight up PAF-influenced tones but they ring like a bell with the 25.5” scale and Strat trem. The pickup actually sounds quite sweet through a clean amp. But we know you’re going to want to push it, because it sings clear and true with the gain turned up.
The low wind Imperial in the neck position is warm, but also firm and bouncy. We ordered it as a reverse zebra open coil not just because it looks cool, but also because the open coils allow a little more high end thru to keep the neck position articulate and balanced. It sounds lush and expansive played clean, thick and muscular through some dirt.
The Sixty-Four in the middle is straight ahead firecracker of a Strat single coil. We know, the middle position doesn’t typically get a lot of love. But if you find yourself needing that immediate snap and crisp EQ of a single coil, you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for here.
The other thing the middle pickup does so well is blend with both the neck and bridge positions. When run alongside either humbucker, the tones are a perfectly-compressed “in between” position that reminds me of ‘90s country tones without extra processing needed.
With the coil splits engaged via push/pulls on the tone knobs, you get your traditional positions 2 and 4 with all their glorious quack. And lastly, yes… you can get just a coil split bridge tone or coil split neck tone in positions 1 and 5. The coil split neck makes quite an impression in its own right, clear and sparkly on the outer edges with a nice “chew” in the midrange.
How Does It Play?
Avi Shabat’s necks feel superb. From the hand shaping that makes each one a little different, to the perfectly rounded fret ends, it feels individual yet instantly familiar. The medium C profile is sure to make a lot of players very happy. The string action hovers right around 4/64” at the 12th fret and the 9.5-12” compound radius fretboard allows for aggressive string bending without buzz.
