What Does Ivey Think?
This guitar is an excellent combination of a few different classic designs all in one. The German carve, all-mahogany body looks awesome with cream binding and 3-Tone Burst with plenty of natural grain popping through. It also provides a great tonal foundation. With the addition of a Bigsby vibrato and Lollar imperial pickups, this guitar is ready to cover a variety of killer tones.
There's an undeniable sweetness to this guitar's resonance. In the bridge position it's full-bodied with a chewy lower midrange that makes it a lot of fun to play. This doesn't make it muddy though, as the Lollar Imperial has a nice upper midrange cut that keeps it tight and clear even with medium to high gain. If you've ever played a good SG, that will get you in the ballpark.
The neck sounds are warm, yet pleasantly crisp thanks to some added sparkle coming off the Bigsby vibrato. When you dig in there's a nice sizzle to higher notes, and a round low end that sounds great for percussive lower register riffs. Combine it with the bridge pickup for a middle position that lets big chords shine beautifully. And embellish to taste with the Bigsby vibrato (which stays in tune quite well on this guitar.)
How Does It Play?
The neck pays homage to a ’59 round C, but with more manageable proportions. It starts off moderately near the nut and thickens up nicely as you work your way up the fretboard. The neck sets up fast and low, hovering around 4/64” at the 12th fret without any buzz. The German Carve top is a really nice touch, improving the comfort of the picking arm coming over the body.
