Starr Guitars isn’t exactly a new kid on the block. For years, Kip Elder has been doing high-end finish makeovers and killer vintage restorations. On the side, he’s been doing custom from-the-ground-up builds for a selective clientele. As he expands his luthier business, Guitars To Be Played is proud to come onboard as a dealer and share the work of Starr Guitars with a larger audience.

What Does Josh Think?

I’m just going to come out and say it: this is the CCM and worship player’s dream. If you are in the camp of Lambertones Ristrettos, think a little warmer and smoother but with a similar transparency. Plugging straight into the amp? Plenty of character. Firing through multiple drive pedals followed by delays and verbs? No problem, plenty of clarity.

The bridge position of this build has extraordinary energy. Even through a clean amp, this guitar sustains like few you’ve heard before. The tone of the Singletone M90 is robust, but open. It does not have the characteristically nasal midrange of a standard P-90. The bottom is firm and powerful, and the top end is round and resonant. And the pickup handles gain exceptionally. It stays tight, full and punchy as you turn up. No need to hold back!

The neck pickup has a smokey Tele vibe going on. The midrange is full but not out of balance. It responds nicely to nuances in pick attack and allows you to draw out a multitude of colors and flavors. Both pickups combined nails the sweet spot for big arpeggio and open-chord tones. You even have independent volume controls for each pickup which allows you to finesse that blend just right.

The 25” scale length of this guitar is a perfect medium between your standard Fender and Gibson-influenced builds. It feels familiar to players moving from either direction. The contoured neck heel makes the transition to the upper frets effortless, assisted by a generous cutaway.

Even with the Mastery vibrato, the guitar weighs just 7lb 2oz. Nice and easy on the shoulder! And the tuning on the guitar is very stable even during use of the vibrato. The nitro finish on the guitar has medium distressing, done tastefully in all the right areas. The body feels nicely worn in where the arm comes across. The neck is smooth and never sticky.

How Does It Play?

The string action on this beauty measures just 4/64” on the low E string and even lower on the high E. The fretwork is exceptional. The neck profile is a subtle V, but don’t read too much into that. The first few frets are nearly a C, the middle of the neck has that subtle V that allows you to continue chording with ease as the neck gets chunkier, and the 9th fret and up transitions to a full C to fill out the hand under high lead lines.
