Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
This guitar is a beast! On the bridge P-90, you’re hitting territory somewhere between a Les Paul Special and a Tele. The maple neck makes the notes pop off the fretboard, yet the pickup is rich and throaty. It has enough output to dirty up many a clean amp with the guitar volume fully up. Revel in its rockabilly attitude or roll the volume back for more of that pure country tone.
Turning up the dirt, this pickup sounds just as good. The low end is big but precise. If you roll off the tone, you can cop some humbucker-styled sounds out of it as well. But you may be tempted to run volume and tone on 10 for maximum sting. Either way, the midrange has incredible character with loads of overtones. And let us tell you, this thing sustains!
The neck pickup is delightfully smokey but with a more open upper midrange. This gives you a lot more room to work than some neck position pickups. The top end tapers off naturally to keep the pickup warm, but there is no lack of definition in the delivery. The middle position, by contrast, has a truly extended upper register. It snaps and sizzles with lush upper harmonics and an immediate attack.
How Does It Play?
This guitar has a beautiful neck. The late 50’s Round Back profile is reminiscent of Gibson’s latest take on a ‘59 neck. Starts out round but not too chunky, and works its way up to a reasonable chunky C at the upper frets. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and even lower on the high E, without buzz.
