What Do We Think?

This guitar hits hard and heavy! It’s not the product of hot or aggressive pickups, but rather the responsive nature of the swamp ash body, maple neck and ebony fretboard. The lows are deep but firm. The mids are powerful, yet articulate. The highs are round and resonant.

The Bare Knuckle Mules are voiced with an ear towards a set of ’59 PAF’s, but built around Alnico IV magnets to simultaneously tighten and thicken the old recipe. There is more piano-like sustain and less bark than a Les Paul, for frame of reference. You may have noticed, we managed to get these loaded with a pair of black covers to match the finish. Black hardware all around as well.

The two-tone black drift/crème drift finish is separated by a classy ring of B/W/B purfling. The grain of the swamp ash is stunning all around. And the neck has a vivid, unwavering flame all the way up and down.

How Does It Play?

The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12^th fret, and nearly down to 3/64” on the high E. All without a hint of buzz. The Knaggs “Slight V” is probably the most subtle V you’ve ever played. Think a round C with barely a little shoulder removed between the nut and fifth fret. You probably wouldn’t peg it for a V, but it does keep that neck nice and comfy in the cowboy chord area while also being full and supportive in the upper register.
