Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
We love a low wind P-90 in a neck position, and it works especially well paired with another of our favorite Tele pickup from Lollar lineup, the Vintage T. Thanks to a resonant alder body and a maple fretboard, this guitar is a perfect balance of depth, punch and spank. Top it off with a full Tele bridge and a chunky ’59-inspired neck profile and you are off to the races with loads of sustain.
The Vintage T in the bridge can twang, that’s for sure. But it does so much more. But it has a sweetness to the top end, always vibrant but never strident. So it’s quite tempting to leave the tone up all the way and never look back. But do yourself a favor, try sweeping it back and playing with all the sounds in between. You can nail classic rock rhythm tones with some overdrive on and the tone rolled back just a little, and even pull off a pretty convincing humbucker lead tone with the tone at 3-4.
The low wind P-90 has a clearer, more transparent midrange than it’s standard wind siblings. It’s still fat and warm, but the midrange is more nuanced and your pick attack more articulate. From sweeping chords to bluesy leads, this one is a real charmer. The output balances nicely with the bridge pickup so you can transition smoothly back and forth. And the middle position has the intense spank of a Strat but without the quack.
How Does It Play?
String action is nice and low, just a hair over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and right at 4/64” on the high E. There is no fret buzz and Fano’s frets are polished silky smooth as always. With a 24.75” scale length and a classic 50’s round C profile that is neither excessively thick nor disappointingly thin, the neck fills the hand very comfortably.
