Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
This one rings loud and true throughout the entire tonal spectrum. Powerful and balanced with an even mixture of lows, mids and trebles when you strum a big open E chord. And there’s not a dead spot on the neck as you play up and down it. Sometimes that’s really all you need to know about a guitar. But let’s plug it in…
The Lollar Imperial humbuckers dish out rich, creamy midrange that makes tube amps deliciously weak in the knees. The bridge position has grit and bite in the upper registers, but also a thick bottom end that loves some good palm muting. Lower gain levels are rich and smooth; higher gains bring on an articulate sting that stays up on top of the mix.
The neck position tracks wonderfully with your pick attack. It is nuanced and open under light attack, and picks up a nice midrange growl under a heavier hand. The middle position is jangly and harmonically rich, even on the simplest of passages. No matter what position you favor on the 3-way toggle, this is a guitar that lets you hear the resonance of the North American Alder body come through in a big way.
How Does It Play?
This guitar plays fast and low without fretbuzz. The string action measures barely a hair over 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret, and right at 4/64” on the high E. The frets are dressed and polished beautifully. The contoured neck heel makes those upper-fret transitions smooth and effortless. The worn neck finish delivers an immediately broken-in feel and is tongue-oiled smooth and fast, while the early 60’s-inspired C profile is temperately slim with some good shoulder to support the hand.
