What Do We Think?
So many tonal options, and not a bad one among them! The TV Jones Power’Tron in the neck position has some excellent growl on bottom, and chirp on top. It has a clearer midrange and better string-to-string definition than a standard humbucker. Dig in for a more throaty attack, or lay back on the pick attack for beautiful clean chords.
The Power’Tron Plus in the bridge is voiced closer to a traditional humbucker, making sure the pickup remains full-bodied and rich even in this position. It has a slightly hotter output than the neck pickup and pushes the amp into overdrive a bit quicker. This puts a more aggressive tone under your fingertips by merely flipping back the 3-way toggle. But make no mistake; this pickup still has plenty of nuance and control.
If you want to ease things up a bit, just pull the push/pull tone knob to coil split the bridge pickup. You get only a slight volume drop, but a whole new texture that really brings out the crisp, chimey side of your rig. Shimmer is one word that comes to mind.
The middle position on the 3-way toggle gives you the two outer pickups together. You’ll find a wide, balanced EQ spectrum with extra snap in the strings. This is the kind of position that lets you load up on the effects and still deliver perfect clarity and nuance.
And we know you’ve been waiting to see how the Super’Tron in the middle is activated! The answer is a push/pull pot on the volume knob. You can combine it with the neck, bridge, or neck & bridge positions. All these combinations hint at “in between” tones, but with a superbly full-bodied delivery. For the funkiest, most Strat-like combination you’ll want to try the middle paired with the coil-split version of the bridge.
If you’re doing the math, there are nine pickup combinations to be had here. And this guitar just slays cosmetically, too! Note the custom small gold plexi pickguard with gold pickups, pickup rings and hardware to match. And though probably hard to see in photos, the Olympic White nitro finish has some gorgeous finish checking.
How Does It Play?
The late 50’s round C neck profile on this beauty has a wonderfully vintage feel. Think in the realm of Gibson’s most recent iteration of a ’59 roundback, which is full but not especially bulky. The guitar sets up with string action hovering around 4/64” at the 12th fret without a hint of buzz.
