What Do We Think?

Not your average drop top! Fano’s take puts a thin nitro “NOS” finish on this gorgeous flame maple top and alder body. If you want your guitar to breathe to its utmost potential, this is the way to do it! No intentional dings or distressing, but it’s naturally going to wear with you and even shows the first light mark or two right of the bat so you don’t have to stress about that initial bump.

Before we talk in detail about the 10 different pickup combinations you have on tap, let’s talk big picture. Strum a chord before plugging in. This is a LOUD, resonant guitar. Some of the main components at play are the aforementioned maple top and alder body along with a roasted maple neck & fretboard. Plugged in and ripping, you’re really going to enjoy the Gotoh 510T tremolo and Lollar Imperial/Special S/Imperial pickup set.

Tones across the board have punch, sustain, and clarity. Pick attack is clear. Yet the guitar has a subtle natural compression as well, so it always sounds tight rather than spikey. This is especially valuable in the coil split tones, which this guitar absolutely aces.

The neck pickup has authority in both its humbucking and coil split modes. The maple fretboard lends its clarity to the neck position, allowing for a variety of uses you might be shying away from on your rosewood necks. Pull up on the tone pot to engage the coil split for a whole new layer of tones. The bottom is still big and round, but the midrange and top end open up further to give you more “shimmering” options.

A push/pull on the volume pot engages the middle pickup. It sounds full and mildly “quacky” when mixed with the neck humbucker. Strat on steroids sort of thing. Honestly, you could get lost here for hours. It’s such a fun position to play on. Coil splitting the neck gives you more traditional “in between” Strat tones when you need those, too. Bridge and middle ups the quack factor.

The maple top imparts a punchy touch to the bridge humbucker. In conjunction with the hardware of the Gotoh bridge, the tones take queues from a Tele in the sense of their clear, “steely” delivery. But of course, they are still endowed with the thickness inherent in the Lollar Imperial. The lower midrange hits you right in the chest on power chords and riffs. Yet you can crank the gain without fear of losing precision and intelligibility.

Running the neck and bridge pickups together gives you an EQ spectrum that is incredibly broad and balanced. Individual strings have bell-like tones and big chords ring clear but vibrant. If you want this guitar to absolutely spank, engage the middle pickup while in the middle position on the 3-way toggle. This gives you all pickups together. And funk away.

How Does It Play?

Fano’s early ‘60s C neck is a nice medium profile with good shoulder and gentle taper from the nut to the heel. The string action hovers around 4/64” at the 12^th fret without any buzz. The frets are dressed to perfection.
