The Alt de Facto series is Fano’s top-of-the-line custom series. These are handbuilt in the USA by one luthier from start to finish so that every instrument tells a unique and cohesive story. Nitrocellulose lacquer body and neck of course. We are an Alt de Facto dealer, so if this isn’t exactly the guitar you are looking for, let us know what you want and we’ll get you the best price on your custom build.
What Do We Think?
This guitar has big, woody chug and dry, punchy mids. The top end has a perfectly-balanced presence and a bit of extra sweetness that makes the whole guitar shimmer on big open chords, even while holding down some magnificent territory underneath.
The bottom end is perhaps the biggest, tightest bottom we’ve ever heard in a JM6. It hits strong, but also with precision. Even the neck position has both power and clarity. A hard thing to put into words perhaps, but you’re going to know what we’re talking about the moment you plug it in.
All three pickup positions complement each other very nicely, and stay within a close enough tonal spectrum that all three are usable without tweaking knobs on the amp. Nonetheless, the individual contributions of each position are clearly delineated. The middle position has a vibrant glimmer and sparkle that emphasizes the highs and lows together, while the bridge position puts more focus on the punchy midrange.
The neck pickup coil splits via a push/pull volume pot. This gives you single coil tones that really “open up” the neck position and endows it with some real snap. There is a recognizable volume drop, but this can either be used to your advantage to clean up a dirty amp, or boosted to bring it back in line with the humbucker volume. The middle position takes on a really sweet, chimey tone with the neck coil split and bridge humbuckers combined.
How Does It Play?
Fano’s early ‘60s C neck is a nice medium profile with good shoulder and gentle taper from the nut to the heel. The string action on this guitar measures a superbly low 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and even lower on the high E, without any buzz. The frets are dressed to perfection, and the back of the neck is sanded down fast and smooth.
