Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. If this isn’t the exact Fano you are looking for, contact us to spec one out precisely to your liking!
What Do We Think?
This MG6 is a natural extension of a Mustang, updated with a few features that make it more usable for the majority of us. First off you have a full 25.5” scale length that feels familiar and intonates precisely. A Gotoh 510T tremolo delivers a wonderful ride and puts this guitar on the ready for a variety of needs and circumstances. Likewise, the Lambertones Ristretto pickups will have you prepped to cover huge swaths of tonal territory..
Compared to single coils, the Ristrettos are bolder with a rounder punch and a warmer bottom end. Compared to a typical P-90, they have less of the midrange snarl and deliver a more even balance across the EQ spectrum. They are smooth but sparkly. The bridge pickup in particular put us in the mode of The Edge without even requiring a compressor… think all the shimmer but with less of the quack of position 2 on a Strat.
The balance between neck and bridge position is marvelous as well. The neck position is fat and juicy, but maintains your string to string definition and allows your amp to breathe. There is no unwanted volume bump when switching to the neck from the bridge either. And the middle position maintains a distinct equilibrium of the two pickups when you want to split the difference tonally.
How Does It Play?
The string action on this beauty measures just over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret, and right at 4/64” on the high E. Without buzz. The frets are nicely dressed and polished. The early 60’s-inspired C profile is temperately slim, but with a nice amount of shoulder to support the hand and thwart fatigue. The finish is sanded off the back to give it a perfectly smooth feel when playing.
