The Alt de Facto series is Fano’s top-of-the-line custom series. These are handbuilt in the USA by one luthier from start to finish so that every instrument tells a unique and cohesive story. Nitrocellulose lacquer body and neck of course. If this isn’t exactly the guitar you are looking for, let us know what you want and we’ll get you the best price on your custom build.
What Do We Think?
This is an amazing alternative to the classic Tobacco Burst LP that, admittedly, we patterned it after when spec’ing it out. It features a mahogany body, mahogany set neck, and flamed maple carved top. All the essentials. Yet without any weight relief, it still comes in at just 7lb 3oz.
The Lollar Imperial in the neck is smooth and sweet. It doesn’t lack for definition, but serves up a real nice, dry midrange. The bridge position remains thick, but the texture of the upper register shifts to a more present, vibrant voicing. You might even find yourself setting the bridge pickup tone knob back a notch or two to fall into a more rounded bark. But it’s nice to have that PAF-inspired top end on tap if you want it! These are really versatile pickups that will go where you need them to throughout the gig.
Another thing you’re sure to like is the way Fano fashions their necks out of a single piece of wood. There is no vulnerable scarf joint at the headstock. The headstock pitch is shallower as well, aiding in the tuning department. In fact, it stays in tune remarkably well. You’ll also appreciate the comfortable profile of the body (measures just 1-3/8” at the edge) and the deep cutaway, which gives you clear access right up to the end of the fretboard.
How Does It Play?
The string action hovers right around 4/64” at the 12th fret without any fretbuzz. The neck profile is full but not huge. Think a moderate ’59 profile. Very nice in the hand.
