Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
The Lollar OmniTron P-90 in the neck position is wound specially for Fano and utilizes Alnico pole magnets, sharing certain build and tonal characteristics with a single coil pickup. This makes the pickup more chimey and transparent than a standard P-90. It still has loads of warmth and plenty of output, never fear! But for folks who find a P-90 in a neck position to be a bit muddy, this is the perfect solution.
Switching to the bridge pickup hones in more on the midrange, sandwiched between an open top end and a supportive bottom. It has that P-90 snarl, but it steers clear of being nasal. This position stays dynamic and responsive to changes in the position or attack of your picking hand.
The combination of the neck and bridge pickups gives you a really interesting, wonderful middle position. It is tight and spanky, even seizing some of the cluck of a Jazzmaster. But it still has the low end body inherent in the two individual pickup positions. Use this position when you need an immediate attack and a bit of a filtered midrange.
All positions respond really nicely to the tone control if you want to grab some humbucker-styled tones on the fly. Rolling off the top end reveals a smooth, sumptuous side to both of the pickups. This is an incredibly versatile guitar, all classic rock ‘n’ roll on the surface but ready to deliver so much more.
How Does It Play?
The PX6 neck profile is a nice 50’s round C that starts with a moderate depth and fills out the hand nicely as you arrive at the upper frets. Think the most recent rendition of Gibson’s ’59 reissues. The fretwork is impeccable. The string action measures barely a hair over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret, and even under 4/64” on the high E. There is no fretbuzz.
