The Lynx offers a lightweight alder or swamp ash body, hand-sanded and contoured to feel right at home. Set in the body is a rock-solid Gotoh Fulcrum Bridge with a steel block to provide fat tones with no tuning issues and a great-feeling tremolo response. Its fast-playing neck profile is still meaty enough to keep the guitar alive, and the Lynx offers a variety of pickup configurations, from SSS to HSS and HSH.
What Do We Think?
Straddling the line nicely between vintage and modern, the Lynx HSH has a classic feel with some modern appointments and tonal leanings. The Gotoh 2-pivot trem is smooth and features a precision-threaded tremolo arm with an adjustable bushing that takes out all the unwanted play.
Starting in the bridge position, we have a Lollar Imperial of the high wind variety to pack some serious punch. It has a strong, well-voiced midrange that’s full and articulate. And it splits well! The coil split sounds like a cross between a Strat and a Tele with only a mild drop in volume from the humbucker.
The standard wind Imperial in the neck position gives your amp some breathing room for soulful and bluesy riffs, while maintaining an open top end thanks to the maple fretboard. This pickup splits as well, giving you jangly single coil tones as quickly as you need them.
The Special S in the middle is deep, but balanced by an equally strong top end. The output keeps up nicely with the humbuckers on either side. The “in between” positions are really where the magic is at. Mixing with either of the ‘buckers gives you a Strat-on-steroids tone with rich harmonics and a bit of compression. Splitting the humbuckers pulls out some midrange and lets you hear the string attack a bit more prominently.
The Cosmic Blue Colorshift finish goes from vibrant Purple to a dark Lake Placid under the light. It really pops with gold hardware. And that neck… you’ll be hard-pressed to find one any flamier. This is the top-tier flame maple available from the guys at Shabat, roasted to perfection!
How Does It Play?
The neck is a familiar medium C. Quick but not overly slim. The finish is sanded off the back for a superbly smooth and broken-in feel. The string action hovers at a nice low 4/64” at the 12th fret, without any buzz. And nobody dresses their fret ends any better than Avi Shabat!
