The Alt de Facto series is Fano’s top-of-the-line custom series. These are handbuilt in the USA by one luthier from start to finish so that every instrument tells a unique and cohesive story. Nitrocellulose lacquer body and neck of course. If this isn’t exactly the guitar you are looking for, let us know what you want and we’ll get you the best price on your custom build.
What Do We Think?
The Lambertones Crema humbucker in the bridge plays on the compressed midrange character of a standard ‘bucker, but adds nice extension on either side as well. It is crisp and punchy for rhythm tones, both clean and dirty. Tone knob on the guitar all the way up will keep things tight and snappy, while rolling it back a touch will smooth things out for a more traditional PAF-styled sound.
And where things get really interesting is the Lambertones Blondie in the neck position. This pickup sounds big and broad, but delightfully clear at the same time. It has a fat, gutsy midrange. And yet it maintains a sweet shimmer on each note the whole time.
There’s some special magic in the middle position as well. Each note is prominent and punchy in a perfectly satisfying manner. There is also a coil split available on the bridge pickup… engage it via the push/pull tone knob to give the middle position a superbly bell-like character.
And even all by itself, the coil split humbucker has a bold tonality. There is a bit of volume drop from the full humbucker, as to be expected. But the tonal character is full and rich. On clean tones, the pickup even conveys a little bit of the “cluck” you would expect to find on a Strat.
This guitar also features a birdseye maple fretboard, kind of hard to detect in the photos but quite a nice touch in person!
How Does It Play?
The neck profile is a moderate “early 60’s” C that leaves enough on the shoulder to support the hand and prevent fatigue, while affording a thin enough profile for blazing fretwork. Fano does an impeccable job dressing and polishing their frets and this one is no exception. The string action settles in at a very low 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and even lower on the high E. There is no fretbuzz anywhere on the neck.
