What Do We Think?

Not only is this instrument a marvel to look at, but it’s a real joy to play and hear as well. The ebony fretboard gives it a delicious midrange punch that makes even the neck pickup stand out in a mix. The Gotoh 6-saddle bridge is very sonically balanced and transfers plenty of vibration to the body of the guitar. It also takes on a nice low profile, so if you’re used to a Fender in this regard you will find it very comfortable under the palm of the picking hand.

The Lollar Imperials sound deep and rich in the lightweight alder body, but also have the lively top end you desire out of a PAF-styled pickup. As we mentioned before, even the neck position packs a good punch. The bridge position is still plenty thick for low riffing, but contains more upper midrange harmonic content that makes it equally suited for raging solos. With individual volume and tone controls for each pickup, you can preset your separate neck and bridge tones for a quick toggle between pickups, or dial in an irresistible middle position.

This guitar features a quartersawn flame roasted maple neck with the afore-mentioned ebony fretboard and beautiful block inlays. And fretboard binding to match the body binding to boot. Gold hardware is just the icing on top.

How Does It Play?

The setup work coming out of Avi’s shop is impeccable. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E at the 12^th fret and even lower on the high E. There is no fretbuzz. Dimensionally, the neck feels like a classic Fender C. But the addition of the fretboard binding with Avi’s carefully rounded edge also imbues it with the vibe of a well played-in Gibson. Tough to say if it’s more one or the other!
