What Do We Think?

This one features an incredibly versatile pickup duo! The Lollar Imperial in the bridge has a warm, smooth midrange and a transparent top end. The depth of the mahogany body and resonance of the neck-thru design really shine through on clean tones. But turn up some gain to take it to a whole new level; the Imperial has a nice snarl that comes alive through an overdrive.

The Lollar Firebird in the neck has plenty of body on bottom, but has a lightning fast response and brilliant pick attack. There’s a touch of the compression of a traditional humbucker, but just a hint. The midrange is nice and open, so if you find a typical humbucker in the neck to be a bit muddy then you’re sure to appreciate the extra clarity this pickup brings to the table. It is reminiscent of the neck position of a Tele but with a bit more output, delivering beautiful cleans and bluesy dirt tones on command.

The middle position mixes the snap and clarity of the neck position with the punch and power of the bridge. The result is an exceedingly lively tone, almost like adding an exciter to a track in the mix. Perhaps the big surprise is just how good this position sounds with some dirt!

Holding this guitar on stage all night is no problem, with it weighing in at just 6lb 11oz. The lightweight Rickard banjo tuners and the position of the neck heel strap button eradicate the neck dive that plagues other Firebird designs, so you won’t have to worry about that either!

How Does It Play?

PLEK’d to perfection. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12^th fret and nearly down to 3/64” on the high E without any buzz. The C profile is a generously-endowed medium C, bold but instantly comfortable.
