Our Lion Deluxe model is all about options and big, heavy tone. Load it with a pair of Lollar P-90s, JM-style pickups, or humbuckers—the choice is yours. The Lion Deluxe comes complete with a nice tummy cut for comfort, optional binding, and separate volume and tone controls for each pickup for the ultimate in tonal control.

What Do We Think?

This guitar packs a punch with a pair of Lollar Regal (Wide Range-styled) pickups and a 1-piece Swamp Ash body. Add in a steel block Strat trem and a maple neck, and you know there’s going to be no lack of clarity and immediacy. This guitar naturally pushes an amp into a bit of compression when you dig in, but can also be sweet and nuanced when you back off.

The neck position is smokey in the mids. It’s big and full on bottom but more present and articulate on top than your standard fare humbucker. It allows individual chord tones to be audible without demeaning the warmth we love in a neck ‘bucker.

The bridge position has an upper midrange chirp, and a bold output that pushes a clean channel into a little bit of breakup. Think AC30 top boost if this guitar was an amp. It is harmonically-rich and very responsive to picking dynamics.

The middle position keeps the brilliance and shimmer of the bridge position, but sounds like the Fender Blackface to your AC30. It “cleans up” a bit without any actual drop in output. The bottom is big and round, the midrange is spanky and the highs are sparkling and effervescent. From funk to sustained open chords or arpeggios, this position can get the job done.

How Does It Play?

The neck is a healthy medium C made of perfectly quartersawn hard maple, sanded down smooth and natural on the back. The setup work coming out of Avi’s shop is impeccable. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and nearly down to 3/64” on the high E, all without a hint of buzz. The fret ends are smooth and nicely rounded. The nut slots are cut to perfection as on all of Avi’s guitars, truly some of the best we’ve seen, keeping you in tune through string bends and trem use.
