What Do We Think?
This all-mahogany, set neck Jr-styled guitar rivals vintage pieces in its bark and clarity. The midrange of the guitar sits in a perfect spot, strong and balanced without becoming overpowering in any particular frequency. The cut Tele bridge adds a subtle tweak to the standard recipe with some extra snap to the attack, making the guitar not necessarily brighter in EQ but rather more lively in disposition.
The Lollar P-90 has loads of character and reveals a number of different voices depending on your playing dynamics and positions of the volume and tone controls. A light picking hand or fingerpicking makes the pickup sound open and airy like a sweet single coil. Digging in produces more grunt and a thick midrange punch. Overdriven rhythm tones are delightfully thick and chunky. Lead tones have nice bite on top but have no trouble getting creamy with a little roll back of the tone knob.
This guitar has quite a “wow” factor the first time you pull it out. From the tobacco burst finish and the grain of the mahogany, to the light weight and the resonance of the first strum. Beyond looking darn cool, the German carve on the top adds a smooth transition for the picking arm. And the best part is that initial impressions are only reinforced the longer you play the instrument.
How Does It Play?
The mahogany neck feels fantastic. The profile is a late 50’s-inspired chunky C with a nice taper from the first fret up through the heel. The string action hovers right around 4/64” across all strings at the 12th fret, with no hint of fret buzz.
