Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. If this isn’t the exact Fano you are looking for, contact us to spec one out precisely to your liking!
What Do We Think?
We love what a maple fretboard does to a pair of P-90s! The EQ spectrum is opened up a little bit, and the note attack is given a little more of a rounded punch. And speaking of the P-90s themselves, the Lollars are some of the best in the business.
The Lollar 5% underwound P-90 in the neck really shines. It is fat but articulate, cleaning up the lower midrange that can be a bit overwhelming with a standard P-90 in the neck. The top end is still smooth and a touch compressed to ensure the pickup sounds smokey and balanced. And it pairs perfectly with the traditional P-90 wind in the bridge.
The bridge position has the perfect growl in the midrange. Just like the neck though, it is a very balanced pickup. When you crank the gain, it cuts beautifully without any particular frequency mucking up the tone. It has plenty of output to saturate your tube amp when desired and the volume knob provides excellent control when you want to clean up your more overdriven tones right from the guitar.
The middle position is hum-cancelling if you find yourself in a situation with noisy power or lots of interference, and has a beautiful sheen that will make you want to come back for more. The attack is bold and immediate, giving punch to individual chord tones.
How Does It Play?
The string action measures a remarkably low 4/64” at the 12th fret on the low E and 3/64” on the high E. There is zero fretbuzz. The early 60’s-inspired C profile is temperately slim, but with a nice amount of shoulder to support the hand and thwart fatigue. The contoured neck heel makes upper-fret transitions smooth and effortless.
