Every guitarist needs one single-coil guitar that delivers the perfect amount of bite and twang to cut through the mix—enter the Shabat Lion Standard. With an array of T-style pickups from Lollar to choose from and a feather-light body (ash, alder or pine) fitted with either a Gotoh three-saddle or modern six-saddle bridge, the Lion Standard offers incredible punch, sustain and resonance.
What Do We Think?
Here’s one from Shabat’s NAMM 2023 Collection! And we love sugar pine Teles. There’s an extra sweetness in the overtones, while the fundamentals remain strong and bell-like. The Lollar Royal T (neck) and Vintage T (bridge) give this one a little extra something special to work with as well.
The Royal T takes queues from a Strat pickup in its wire gauge and construction. It sounds incredibly deep and throaty in this instrument. With all the warmth it exudes, you may not find yourself dialing back the tone knob in this position. But if you do, rest assured that it maintains perfect note clarity even as you darken the top end and roll back the attack.
The middle position is monumentally lush. It has a big bottom end, ringing middle register and shimmering highs. It sounds just gorgeous on big chord arpeggios. It also excels at percussive single note lines, crisp and punchy but with abundant body and backing.
The Vintage T in the bridge is full-on Telecaster. It pops and twangs with the best of them. It also responds quite nicely to the tone knob; it’s amazing how sweet and well-mannered it becomes with a little coaxing. And what might be most surprising is how well the pickup handles gain as you work back the tone knob. The low end is big and robust, and the pickup stays tight and punchy as the gain knob inevitably creeps up on your amp.
How Does It Play?
The neck is a healthy medium C, bordering on chunky to ensure plenty of string resonance makes it from the nut to the body. The string action hovers measures just 4/64” at the 12th fret on the low E string and even lower on the high E, without any buzz. The sanded neck feels great and lends to a fast, smooth playing experience.
