Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. If this isn’t the exact Fano you are looking for, contact us to spec one out precisely to your liking!
What Do We Think?
This one is for the player who wants to put the miles on the guitar themselves… it features a Seafoam Green finish in extra light distress with just a few very small signs of relic’ing and a little natural finish checking. Rosewood fingerboard is one of the darkest we’ve seen. Underneath, it’s all built on a resonant alder body and hard maple neck; this guitar has a good loud acoustic resonance before you even plug in.
The Lollar OmniTron P-90 in the neck position is wound specially for Fano and utilizes Alnico pole magnets, sharing certain build and tonal characteristics with a single coil pickup. This makes the pickup a little bit more open through the midrange than a traditional P-90 and really highlights that tonal "zone" between a single coil and a humbucker. Rich and warm in the low end but chimey through the mids and shimmering on top.
The relationship of the OmniTron in the neck and the standard wind P-90 in the bridge gives you a wonderful middle position. It filters out some of big low register to deliver tones that are exceptionally tight and spanky. The feel here is very Jazzmaster-esque with a quick attack and a touch of that out-of-phase scoop.
Switching to the bridge pickup instantly produces a fatter midrange punch. The top end is smooth; the low end is controlled but amply supportive. In true P-90 fashion, it has plenty of output to saturate your tube amp when desired. You can tailor the EQ with your guitar’s tone knob to cop PAF-style humbucking tones. And the volume knob provides excellent control when you want to clean up the dirt right from the guitar.
How Does It Play?
This beauty sets up with incredibly low string action of 4/64” at the 12th fret on the low E string, and 3/64” on the high E string! There is no fretbuzz anywhere on the neck. The frets are beautifully dressed and polished. The early 60’s-inspired C profile is temperately slim, but with a nice amount of shoulder to support the hand and thwart fatigue.
