Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. If this isn’t the exact Fano you are looking for, contact us to spec one out precisely to your liking!
What Do We Think?
This is acoustically a very loud instrument! The alder body is nice and resonant, and the maple fretboard helps gives the guitar that coveted piano-like attack and sustain. To put it simply, the strings just sound bigger than they are!
We’re big fans of the Lollar Novel 90 pickups in this guitar as well. Think of them as a more well-mannered P-90. They still have the warmth and body, but they have a sweeter sounding middle register and a little more roundness when you pluck the string. The neck tone is throaty but exhibits wonderful chirp and clarity at the same time.
The bridge pickup sits somewhere between a single coil and a humbucker. It’s got a hint of the compression and smoothness of a ‘bucker, but is more evenly spread across the EQ spectrum. Clean tones have a nice fat “pop,” crunch tones cut and grind, and higher gain lead tones sound right at home with a slight roll-off of the tone knob.
The middle position will spank and funk to your heart’s content. The attack is immediate. The trebles are brilliant but pleasing. This position by no means sounds thin; just upbeat and snappy. Decked out in a very lightly distressed Olympic White finish and dressed up with a pair of tortoise pickup covers, “upbeat and snappy” could probably describe the guitar as a whole as well!
How Does It Play?
These guitars come in playing great right from Fano. The frets are beautifully dressed and polished. The early 60’s-inspired C neck profile has just a little more meat than a Fender “Modern C” at the first fret and tapers up to a fuller profile to support the hand at the upper frets. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and even lower on the high E, without any buzz.
