Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
We spec’d this guitar to be one flexible beast and it delivers! You have a Lollar Firebird in the neck paired with a Low Wind Imperial in the bridge position. You have individual coil splits on each, so you can even mix one pickup split and the other humbucking in your middle position.
The Firebird in the neck is snappy and open, yet hum-cancelling. Paired with the Gotoh 510TS steel block tremolo, you could think of this as a souped-up Strat neck tone. A little punchier and a little hotter, with a touch of natural compression but still with all the clarity and nuance. And with the coil split you can get those vintage, lower output Strat tones as well.
The Low Wind Imperial in the bridge is a stellar counterpart to the Firebird. As humbuckers go, it leans on the well-mannered side with a strong bottom end, clean midrange and sweet, articulate treble. Think humbucker Clapton in the bridge position (as opposed to the “woman tone”). The coil split dishes out some pretty convincing Tele tones in a pinch too.
Splitting the bridge alongside the Firebird in humbucking mode delivers juicy “in-between” Strat tones. You won’t have any trouble dialing up Mark Knopfler tones right in line with “Sultans of Swing.” Exactly as we had hoped, this guitar delivers a superbly versatile set of tones, any one of which could keep you occupied all night long.
How Does It Play?
The neck profile is a moderate “early 60’s” C that leaves enough on the shoulder to support the hand and prevent fatigue, while affording a thin enough profile for blazing fretwork. Speaking of fretwork, Fano does an impeccable job dressing and polishing their frets and this one is no exception. The string action hovers right around 4/64” at the 12th fret without any buzz. The body is nicely contoured front and back to round out a superbly-comfortable playing experience.
