Mario Martin guitars are hand built in Murfreesboro, TN just 40 minutes down the road from us! Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. These guys maintain one of the best collections of tonewoods around, and every neck/body/pickup combination is chosen carefully to amplify the personality of the guitar as a whole. Whether you crave an S-style guitar straight out of 1958 or the unique Tele-Strat mashup that is the Honcho, we are confident you’ll find what you’re looking for in a Mario Martin.
What Do We Think?
This is not your straight-laced Tele. The Lollar Regal humbuckers are a superb take on the Fender WideRange pickup, with a little added personality. The neck position reveals a warm southern charm hiding beneath the lightly distressed exterior. The pickup has a genteel middle register that allows chord work to breath, enveloped by a generous bottom end and expressive upper frequency response.
A quick flip to the bridge position conjures the alter ego, tight and edgy but with more of a classic British rock ‘n’ roll flavor than a Tele twang. Cleans leave you pining for more, and dirts satisfy a distinct craving for clarity even while remaining big and punchy. Play around with rolling back the tone knob; independent volume and tone controls for each pickup allow you to set-and-forget once you dial in the perfect sound.
The middle position is where you’ll find the spank. The purity and transparency are almost single-coil in nature. This position works equally well for strumming shimmery chords as it does for laying down open-voiced interval lines. This position perhaps also best embodies the piano-like attack and sustain that you hear when picking the guitar unplugged.
Accessorized with a Bigsby Vibrato, Gotoh vintage style staggered tuners that allow for the absence of a string tree on the headstock, and brass barrel saddles in a cut tele bridge, this T-Deluxe is truly ready to go where the moment takes you.
How Does It Play?
Mario’s 60’s Oval neck profile is always a genuine pleasure to play, with curves in all the right places. It is of the chunkier variety of Oval C’s, measuring .87” at the first fret and .94” at the 12th. Think a medium C with broad shoulders that support the hand effortlessly. It also has the gloss gently knocked off the back for a smooth feel in the hand.
