Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. If this isn’t the exact Fano you are looking for, contact us to spec one out precisely to your liking!
What Do We Think?
First of all, this “Builder’s Choice” TC6 Oltre features a couple specs that are not usually available on the Oltre series. Namely the clear neck finish instead of vintage tint, and also a pair of custom cupcake knobs. You won’t find another one quite like this.
And then there’s the unique pickup combination. The TV Jones SuperTron in the neck position is fat and meaty. It has the distinctive FilterTron clarity in the upper register, but a thicker and warmer low midrange. You might liken it to the rare maple neck Les Paul; plenty of bottom end with that wonderful snap on top.
The Lollar OmniTron P-90 in the bridge position is wound specially for Fano, featuring pole magnets instead of the traditional P-90 bar magnets. The result is a pickup that is equal parts single coil and P-90. In other words, you’ve got a Tele bridge position with a lush midrange while retaining a vibrant sparkle.
The middle position has a great stringy “snap” as it blends the characteristics of the individual pickups. Warmth and
The higher strings have a nice chime while the lower strings have plenty of thump, a perfect tone to support Chet Atkins influenced chord melodies.
How Does It Play?
These guitars come in playing great right from Fano. The frets are beautifully dressed and polished. We have it set up with action nearly down to 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and under 4/64” on the high E, without any buzz. The early 60’s-inspired C profile is temperately slim, but with a nice amount of shoulder to support the hand and thwart fatigue. We do a thorough check and make the occasional truss rod, nut or saddle tweak to make sure the guitar plays exactly to our liking.
