What Do We Think?

It’s tough to get past the weight on this one! 5lb 11oz. Seriously! A real shoulder-saver, and yet not light on tone. The first thing that strikes us when playing the guitar is the bounce that it has in the middle register. Try getting that out of your average Gibson. The snap of the strings is reminiscent of a good Tele, yet the tone is thick with just the right touch of P-90 snarl. The ABM Wraparound bridge is superbly lively and gives every note a buoyancy that rises above in the mix.

The Wolfetone P-90 tracks exceedingly well with the tone knob. Rolling it back a hair subdues the bite of the P-90 if you’re after a smoother, mellower delivery. This works particularly well for fattening up your clean tones while maintaining a beautiful sparkle on top. For the perfect overdrive tones, we dig the tone knob all the way up to get the front end of your tube amp really singing.

The guitar also features a 2-way slider switch to engage a “cocked wah” tone circuit. It’s real fat and a little honky. The top end bleeds through just the right amount to keep things articulate, and you have this wonderfully unique midrange character to work with. Think “Money for Nothing,” Dire Straits.

Photos do not do justice to the Sky Blue Flake finish! In photos the guitars may appear to be just a cross between a Pelham Blue and an Iced Blue Metallic. But in reality, the finish is much more vibrant than either. Doug’s use of a variety of flake sizes in his metal flake finishes really cause them to dance under the light. We haven’t seen anyone do them better.

How Does It Play?

Incredible. Doug PLEKs the necks on his guitars and the results are undeniable. Of course, the entire guitar displays expert craftsmanship that all comes together the moment you pick it up. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12^th fret and all the way down to 3/64” on the high E, without buzz. The medium C neck profile is classic but comfortable.
