Mario Martin guitars are hand built in Murfreesboro, TN just 40 minutes down the road from us! Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. These guys maintain one of the best collections of tonewoods around, and every neck/body/pickup combination is chosen carefully to amplify the personality of the guitar as a whole. Whether you crave an S-style guitar straight out of 1958 or the unique Tele-Strat mashup that is the Honcho, we are confident you’ll find what you’re looking for in a Mario Martin.
What Do We Think?
A Tele with growl, punchy bottom and a beautiful “dry” top end. First of all, this Paulownia body build is paired with a 1-piece roasted flame maple neck, ¼ sawn to boot. Steel saddles and Gotoh staggered vintage tuners. Weight all in? Just 4lb 13oz.
The neck pickup packs lots of sweet vowel. It takes a very vocal approach, not scooped but rather rich and warm. Even a little spongy. The upper mids are nicely rounded while the trebles are sweet and Straty.
The bridge is likewise on the darker side of Tele tones. It does not lack for clarity, but achieves its articulation by tailoring and opening up the upper midrange rather than spiking any higher frequencies. It has a gutsy midrange growl. There is also a surprising sweetness when playing with dynamics.
The middle position in typical parallel configuration is quick and snappy. It can get funky when you need it to, featuring more bite through the upper mids than the other positions. This works perfectly when you want to keep the guitar crisp and forward in the mix during your more rhythmic playing.
The middle position in series (achieved by throwing the 4-way pickup selector switch to its forward-most position) creates a tone that is a cross between a humbucker and a single coil. Indeed, it is essentially a humbucker with two very distant coils. This creates all the warmth of a humbucker with perhaps a little quicker attack and a nice chirp in the mids.
How Does It Play?
Mario’s “Chunky C+” neck sounds like a lot to handle, but it’s not. Think a moderately chunky C profile. His spec is 0.88” at the 1st fret to 0.95” at the 12th. The neck sets up perfectly for string action hovering right around 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret, and 3/64” on the high E. The back of the neck has the gloss knocked down slightly, just enough to give you a smoother and more satin-like feel.
